The dam and appurtenant structures are among larger projects executed by GP"Hidrotehnika-Hidroenergetika". The reservoir was intended to supply town of Kosovska Mitrovica with water for irrigation and production of electric power. Secondary dam "Pridvorica", 10 m high,  was constructed for power production.
